Abstract This NIOSH Alert describes five incidents in which crane operators were electrocuted following contact of the crane with overhead power lines. Current regulations for the prevention of such incidents are outlined (de-energizing power lines, use of insulated barriers, maintaining a minimum clearance between power lines and the crane). Recommendations for employers include: compliance with current regulations; notification of power line owners; evaluation of jobsites; use of work methods not requiring cranes; worker training.
