Abstract Weight loss and fluid intake during a working day were measured in a group of 14 workers performing maintenance and repair on blast furnaces at WBGT temperatures of 27.9-42.6°C. On days when the workers had free access to tap water and green tea as beverages, they consumed an average of 0.75L and rehydrated 47%. When a commercial isotonic beverage (a flavoured glucose-electrolyte solution) was offered as a third choice, fluid intake was 1.03L and rehydration was 61%. This indicates that such beverages have value in the maintenance of workers' fluid and electrolyte balance in hot environments.
