Abstract Collection of articles that address the aetiology, pathogenesis as well as the medical treatment and supervision of employees with diabetes mellitus. In addition, the work capacity of diabetic employees and the effects of shift work on diabetics are discussed. The work situation of diabetics in Germany, France, Spain, the United Kingdom and USA are described by authors from these respective countries. For example, diabetics are not allowed to fly an aircraft or drive a train in any of these countries.
