Abstract Butyl acrylate is irritant to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes and may cause skin sensitization in susceptible animals and humans; cross sensitization may also occur to other acrylic acid esters. Animal experiments have shown that the substance is of low to moderate toxicity; no systemic toxic effects have been reported following prolonged or repeated exposure. Butyl acrylate is maternally toxic and embryotoxic in mice and rats, but at the currently accepted occupational exposure limits, represents no reproductive risk to man. No evidence of genotoxic or carcinogenic potential has been reported.
