Abstract In the period between March 1991 and August 1993 the particulate emissions from diesel engines were determined in underground potash and salt mines. From the results a mathematical method was derived for predicting the soot emission and exposure levels in underground mines caused by diesel engines. The accuracy of the mathematical model was confirmed by measurements. The prediction method which can be used in all mines is less costly than measurements for which a glass fibre filter for sampling and coulometry for analysis are used. This measurement method was found not to be applicable in coal mines because of interference by the coal dust.
