Abstract This literature review (which replaces article abstracted under CIS 91-1192) describes field and laboratory studies demonstrating how the length of time spent working on VDUs can affect the occurrence and deterioration of symptoms of visual, postural and psychological strains. Experimental studies on the effects of various rest periods allocation on the performance and physiological responses during VDU work are then examined. Several proposals and recommendations on work/rest schedules for VDU operators are discussed.
