Title Ferruginous bodies in cases with occupational and non-occupational exposure to inorganic dusts - A study of 40 matched cases
Bibliographic information Winter 1992, Vol.23, No.4, p.169-175. Illus. 21 ref.
Abstract Concentrations of ferruginous bodies (FB) were estimated in samples of lung tissue obtained from 40 patients with a history of exposure to inorganic dusts and from 40 controls with no such exposure. Concentrations of FB in the exposed patients were higher than in the controls; 70% of exposed patients had more than 100f/g of dry lung tissue compared to 27.5% in the control cases. It was concluded that lung digest and fibre counts help to confirm exposures to inorganic dusts above the background values found in the general population. A table shows occupations, working time and fibre concentrations in 19 cases with pneumoconiosis.
