Abstract Little information is available concerning the effects of dibutyl phthalate in humans. Animal experiments indicate that the substance has no acute toxicity and its subacute toxicity is low. No irritant or sensitizing effects have been observed. The main adverse effects observed in animals are enlarged livers and impairment of fertility and embryo development; it is suspected of causing cancer of the liver.
