Abstract This study was designed to evaluate the relationship between working activity and complaints of the locomotor system among lift fitters. The study involved work analyses on building sites and a survey, using a standardized questionnaire, among 70 lift fitters and 70 matched controls assigned to light work. Part of the questionnaire focused on the prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints during the preceding 7 days, the preceding 12 months and before, and on the aetiological role of working conditions. Musculoskeletal complaints in the low back, shoulder, and neck regions were significantly more prevalent among lift fitters than among controls. The high prevalence of complaints in lift fitters may be ascribed to the frequent manual handling of heavy loads, the use of vibrating tools, and the adoption of unfavourable working postures for long periods. The prognostic significance of these complaints, either transient muscular fatigue or early signs of structural alterations, cannot be determined on the basis of these results and should be assessed through a prospective study. Annex: questionnaire used for the study.
