Abstract To measure the slip resistance of floors and shoe soles, German Mutual Accident Insurance Funds and other bodies propose to use "walking tests". This translation of an article published in 1986 in Kautschuk und Gummi. Kunstoffe, 1986, 39, 10, p.907-911 reports on a test in which a subject walks on an increasingly inclined plane. The coefficient of friction is calculated on the basis of the angle of incline at which the subject no longer feels safe. From the point of view of the objectivity, reliability (repeatability) and validity (representativeness) of the results obtained, this method compares very poorly with those using mechanical devices. It is therefore not recommended as a standard method; efforts should be made to continue improving the mechanical devices.
