Abstract Environmental toxicants, including those from industrial sources, represent potentially preventable causes of chronic kidney disease. This review focuses on the aetiology of chronic renal failure of recognized occupational origin other than malignancies. Agents discussed are: heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, chromium, copper, and uranium), organic solvents (hydrocarbons), beryllium and silicon.
