Abstract Between 1 June 1990 and 5 May 1991, 25 cases of blood contamination occurred at Kobe Rosai Hospital. Ten staff members were contaminated by blood from patients with anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody. Nine were treated with alpha-interferon; none of the 10 contracted hepatitis. Screening of inpatients for this antibody (C100-3) revealed a prevalence of 11.3%, which is almost 10 times the rate in normal subjects in Japan. The rate in patients with liver disease was 15.4%, and 4.8% in the other departments. Thus, the risk of HCV infection of staff is high. Patients should be screened for HCV on admission.
