Abstract Psychological effects of the use of computers are discussed. Attention is focused on two main effects: (a) the introduction of new technologies affects the worker's qualifications; (b) the requirements that new technologies impose with respect to new qualifications. The results of a psychological survey of 147 computer personnel in the Spanish banking sector are presented. Significant variation was observed in relation to the educational background of workers. The main expectations which emerged during psychological examinations were directly related to the dynamics of change that affected the institutions, such as amalgamation, relocation of place of business, and computer systems harmonisation. A syndrome defined as "uncertainty" was observed in many workers. With regard to shift work, psychological fatigue, alterations in sleeping and eating patterns, and difficulties in family relations were observed. A model based on systems theory is presented for the proposed actions of occupational health services to improve the quality of working life in workplaces with computers. Summary in English.
