Title The role of regulations in the prevention of occupational injury
Bibliographic information Jan. 1993, Vol.16, No.1, p.47-66. 9 ref.
Abstract An investigation was made of 98 worksites where severe or moderately severe injuries had recently been reported, and, where possible, of matching worksites where a similar accident had not occurred, at least for a period of 2 years. On the basis of the results it was estimated that about one-half of serious injuries are attributable to violation of a regulation and that failure of compliance with regulations would result in a 2.25-fold increase in the injury rate. Compliance was associated with management awareness of regulatory requirements and with training of management in safety. It is concluded that regulations have a substantial relevance to occupational injury. Summaries in French and German.
