Abstract Based on the experience of the German Federal Railways, it is shown that the introduction of new technologies leads to safety improvements, and therefore should result in better job satisfaction. However, increasing reliance on automation and current trends in work rationalisation induce a feeling in workers that they work below their capacity under normal working conditions, but above it in crisis situations. This lack of balance results in increasing job dissatisfaction. This book recommends that a framework be established for better job design in the transport industry of the future, a design that leaves a place for human beings in the system, and one that considers human shortcomings as inherent in human nature.
