Abstract |
Dissertation for a Diploma in Special Studies in occupational medicine. A case of yperite poisoning during ground clearing operations is described and the use of the gas in chemical warfare is reviewed. A study of its toxic mechanisms shows that this gas is an alkylating agent responsible for DNA modifications. Survey of some other cases of occupational poisoning, as well as of clinical effects, diagnosis, and treatment. Evidence of long term risk, including experimental mutagenic and carcinogenic data, and human genotoxic and epidemiological data, serves to classify yperite as a human carcinogen. Advice is given on the action to take in the case of occupational poisoning. |
