Abstract These guidelines were formulated to assist health care facilities in developing and implementing programmes to promote appropriate antimicrobial use. General principles of antimicrobial use, the essential components of an institutional programme and the organisation and implementation of a programme are presented. An annotated bibliography, glossary, and terms of reference of the working group which formulated the guidelines are appended. Also available in French.
