Abstract This booklet, intended for those engaged in the development, testing and manufacture of respiratory protective equipment (RPE), as well as for safety officers and trade-union labour inspectors, reviews the state of the art in research and regulatory activities concerning ergonomic qualities of RPE, systematises the data available from Soviet and foreign publications and legislative sources on the hygiene, anthropometric, physiological and psychological characteristics of different types of RPE, defines ergonomic requirements for the RPE and surveys the actual qualities of existing Soviet-made RPE. In an appendix: methods for evaluating the ergonomic qualities of RPE currently in use in the USSR.
