Abstract Sweden has set a stringent limit on the level of electromagnetic radiation emitted by visual display units (VDUs). Electromagnetic radiation by personal computers on the German market can be up to 40 times the level allowed by Swedish standards. A table provides information on the protection offered by various types of filters used on VDUs. Proof now exists that VDUs emit (even if in extremely small quantities) flame retardants such as dibenzofurans, which are highly toxic and particularly dangerous during manufacturing of the VDUs or in case of fire. An efficient ventilation is recommended until more restrictive standards are issued in Germany.
