Abstract A standardised vigilance and attention-span test was administered to 125 employees of the German Federal Railways. After periods ranging from 4 weeks to 2 years these employees were retested. Cognitive performance changes between the 2 perception tests were compared with those in a control group performing the 2 tests consecutively without a break. Both groups performed significantly better in the second test. Performance improvement was independent of the interval between the first and second test.
