Title Non-palletised building blocks packed in flat steel straps. Assessment of the Rebichon-Signode process
Original title Paquets de parpaings cerclés sans palette - Evaluation du procédé Rebichon-Signode [in French]

Abstract Building blocks are packed today in flat steel strapping in order to provide users with an alternative to the traditional loading on pallets for transport, handling and storage. After multiple handling, however, blocks packed in this way have been found to work loose and create an accident risk. The INRS therefore undertook a study of the Rebichon-Signode process, which is described in this paper: the process; testing; tensile tests on strapping; transport and handling tests on packs reconstituted in the laboratory and on packs under real field conditions; discussion of the validity and stringency of the tests; interpretation of the results; comparison of the behaviour of palletised and strap-wrapped blocks; recommendations regarding strapping and handling of packs. The Rebichon-Signode process can be further improved, at no extra cost, by strapping the third layer of blocks from the bottom, which enables the volume of the pack to be increased by one third.
