Title Microbial containment in conventional fermentation processes
Bibliographic information June 1988, Vol.3, No.6, p.177-181. Illus. 15 ref.
Abstract Walkthrough surveys were conducted by NIOSH at 6 US fermentation plants. About 200 bioaerosol samples were collected using a 2-stage cascade impactor. The highest measurement obtained was at a filter press where the geometric mean of total viable microorganisms was 5626 colony forming units/m3 with the predominant strain being the process microorganism. The data collected indicate that controls are most needed around high-energy oprerations where aerosolution is likely to occur, such as filtering operations, agitator shafts, and sampling ports. In addition, work practices are a major factor to be considered.
