Abstract This study concerns the calculation of the densities of currents that pass through the organs of the body (especially the heart) as a function of externally applied voltage. Calculations were validated by direct comparative measurements. Three-dimensional plots of current density in body cross-sections illustrate the difference in danger between transverse and longitudinal current. The method permits estimation of risks due to electric excitation and to heating. There were discrepancies between the current calculated to be necessary to provoke ventricular fibrillation in man and the value obtained from animal studies.
