Abstract This MD thesis presents an epidemiological survey conducted in France on the occupational origins of bladder cancer. The histology and carcinogenic mechanisms of bladder cancer are reviewed. The statistical methods used in this kind of epidemiological study are described. Detailed description of the present case-control study, taking into consideration non-occupational factors and occupational factors by product and industrial activity. The results of this survey confirm the conclusions of other surveys; by demonstrating the responsibility of certain chemical substances for the development of bladder cancer: aromatic amines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrosamines.
