Abstract 26.4% of all high-voltage electrical accidents in excavations during the period 1969-1981 involved cables. The most common cause of injury from current or arcing was erroneous supply of power to a disconnected but ungrounded cable. Injuries occurred most often during the disconnection and reconnection of cables during normal operation of equipment. (Percentages of other causes and circumstances are listed.) 70% of the injuries were attributable to failure to use safety devices (insulating gloves, portable grounding systems, voltage detectors, etc.). The safety situation can be improved by: assuring the supply and use of safety equipment; using plug-type connectors instead of junction boxes; introducing improved shielded cables and circuit breakers.
