Abstract The resistance to slip of shoe sole materials is evaluated by measuring the coefficient of friction, which is defined as the ratio of the horizontal force required to cause a slip and the vertical force (body weight) applied to the shoe. Various slip resistance test machines are described. Factors affecting slips are identified (contaminants, floor materials, weather conditions). Recommendations are given for the use of various shoe soles under specific conditions.
