Abstract 100 workers exposed to metallic mercury vapour in mercury cell rooms and 100 control workers were studied. Hazards of inorganic mercury are set out, and the health screening programme of the plant under study is outlined. None of the study subjects complained of urinary symptoms. There was no evidence to show that the incidence of renal dysfunction was greater in the mercury exposed population than in the control group. A further aim of the study was to assess the occupational health nurse's contribution to a research team: company policy encourages nurses to qualify themselves for such tasks.
