Abstract At the beginning and end of a working day, several measurements were taken on 30 casting cleaners in a foundry: surface temperature and threshold of pain of the forearm, palm, and finger; sensitivity to 63- and 125-Hz vibration; strength and endurance of wrist muscles; vascular rheology of the forearm and finger; temporal distribution of pulse waves in the upper third of the forearm and between the forearm and finger. Few of the differences between pre- and post-work values were statistically significant. Of the 76 pairs of values tested, 20 were significantly correlated. The correlation coefficients of 5 pairs of values changed significantly over the workday. Correlation analysis may be a useful tool in detecting the onset and studying the mechanism of vibration disease.
