Abstract Tank-truck mounted water guns, used more and more frequently by firefighters, may be the cause of electrical accidents when fires are being fought in the vicinity of high-voltage electrical installations. If the water jet is aimed at a high-voltage or even low-voltage installation whilst the insulated motorised pump is short-circuited by a low-impedence body (e.g. a human body), a leakage current flows back to the voltage source via the earth. A description is given of trials carried out on 110 and 220kV installations, aimed at measuring the leakage current in relation to the distance from the source. Types of nozzle that should be used are discussed.
