Title Acute and subacute symptoms among workers in the printing industry
Bibliographic information Feb. 1982, Vol.39, No.1, p.70-75. Illus. 10 ref.
Abstract Report of a study of vision, respiratory, neurological and olfactory symptoms in 52 male printers exposed to a wide range of chemical, products including highly volatile organic solvents, and 52 controls. The printers had significantly more eye, respiratory and neurological (vision disorders, vertigo, headache) symptoms than controls and complained more frequently of abdominal pain and flatulence. The symptoms showed no relation to age or length of employment, but neurological and general symptoms were related to shift work. Although exposure levels of dust and organic solvents were well below required threshold values, symptom number and magnitude exceeded acceptable levels and the possibility of additive effects is suggested. It is proposed that use of the most toxic solvents be abandoned, that the total quantity of solvents be reduced, and that ventilation be improved.
