Title Fault arc detection within flameproof enclosures
Bibliographic information 23 Feb. 1981. (Available as reprint REE 0452. 1p. Illus.)
Abstract An electrical fault arcing across certain plastic insulating materials within a flameproof enclosure can render traditional flameproof protection ineffective. Discussion of the problem and description of a solution which has recently been developed. Experiments with several devices (light, smoke, heat and pressure detectors) showed that a bi-metal, bi-stable thermostat was the most suitable, small, simple, reliable and cheap device to apply a low level of earth leakage to one phase to cause the back-up protection to trip out, thus preventing ignitions in flameproof enclosures. Table of tripping times for this thermal detector (arc current 400A, open circuit voltage 400V, arc power 120kW).
