Abstract A warning is given on the health hazards of chemicals in the toners used in xerography (carbon black with aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons and nitropyrenes, thermoplastic resins). Sections cover: routes of entry into the body; symptoms in photocopying workers (effects on mucous membranes, skin, lung function, nervous system; allergic effects; chronic effects); results of tests showing that toners contain mutagenic and carcinogenic substances; TLVs for these substances; effects of other substances in toners (epoxy resins, styrene); effects of ozone, organic solvents and selenium. Results of a questionnaire survey of exposed workers.
