Title Functional and structural features of erythrocyte membranes in workers exposed to toluene
Original title Strukturno-funkcional'nye osobennosti membran ėritrocitov pri vozdejstvii toluola [in Russian]
Bibliographic information Jan. 1981, No.1, p.27-29. Illus. 7 ref.
Abstract The blood toluene level in printing shop workers may be as high as 0.06mg% at the end of the working day. No symptoms of clinical toluene poisoning were observed; however, there was a change in the phospholipid concentration of erythrocyte membranes, a weakening of the bond between membrane constituents and impairment of membrane function. There was an increase in cell diameter, volume and surface area, a rise in osmotic resistance and a reduction in mean life from 65 to 56 days.
