Abstract The reduction factor (Cp), the amount by which the single-pulse TLV or maximum permissible exposure is reduced to give the multiple-pulse value, is calculated. Cp can be empirically determined by taking the ratio of threshold dosages for 1 pulse in a pulse train and a single exposure of equal duration. Analytical expressions for Cp may be obtained from theoretical thermal damage models based on physical principles. Using both approaches multiple-pulse additivity was accounted for by a thermal damage model. The multiple-pulse Cp was a function of both pulse repetition frequency and total number of pulses (N). The thermal model did not yield a single, simple expression for Cp, but the empirical 1/N1/4 expression was an adequate approximation.
