Abstract This M.D. thesis considers the symbolism and psychosomatic features of the foot and footwear, and reviews the evolution, anatomy and biomechanics of the human foot. An overview of the development of footwear through the ages, anatomy of the mass-produced shoe and safety footwear, references to safety footwear standards and legislative texts, and up-to-date statistics on feet accidents. Report on a survey: methodology and location of study, definition of the normal adult plantar posture and flat-footedness. The results of the survey, which covered the workers, their footwear and feet-ache, shows both the effectiveness of safety footwear and the discomfort caused by the protective toecaps. Importance of foot anomalies in the complaints of workers about safety footwear. Role of the occupational physician in the choice of footwear and the periodic inspection of workers' feet.
