Title Effects of nonachloropredioxin and other hydroxychlorodiphenyl ethers on biological membranes.

Abstract The pesticide pentachlorophenol (PCP) contains hydroxychlorodiphenyl ethers and other compounds as impurities. The effects of hydroxy derivatives of nonachlorodiphenyl ether (NDE), 2-hydroxy-2',4,4'-trichlorodiphenyl ether (HTDE), and PCP, were studied in the human erythrocyte membrane. The hydroxy NDEs are very potent haemolytic agents. The order of activity is: 2-hydroxy-NDE (nonachloropredioxin)>3-hydroxy-NDE>4-hydroxy-NDE>HTDE>technical PCP>pure PCP. Haemolytic potency varied with the degree of chlorination and to some extent with the position of the HO group. The hydroxychlorodiphenyl ethers can directly alter properties of biological membranes.
