Abstract Respiratory symptoms occurred in women machinists making seat covers from nylon backed with flame-bonded polyurethane foam. A study of 192 women showed an increase in asthmatic symptoms associated with this fabric. Results are given of lung function and environmental studies. Concentrations of 0.0003-0.003ppm tolylene diisocyanate (TDI) were found in the air around the fabric. 4 of 9 women with symptoms had IgE antibodies to TDI.
