Abstract Studies in 78 workers exposed to n-hexane, 2-methylpentane, 3-methylpentane, methylcyclopentane present in the glues and 86 controls showed a statistically significant higher prevalence of vestibular function changes in the exposed workers. The changes were typical of the toxic nucleo-reticular syndrome, involving the nerve structure of the medulla oblongata. Symptoms complained were emotional disorders (48%), dyspeptic disturbances (29%), subjective vertigo (20%), headache, asthenia, mucosal irritation. Exposure levels were not high, and there was no dose-effect relation.
