Abstract Static lighting has the disadvantage of being monotonous with regard to both illumination and colour, and of causing a reduction in alertness. Studies were undertaken to evaluate the influence of lighting on alertness in 2 operators (one performing visual tasks similar to those of a navigator, the other auditory tasks similar to those of a radio operator) working in isolation. The results of observations over an 8h shift confirm the positive role of dynamic lighting, that is gradual adaptation of the illumination level to the type of work and the physiological and psychological status as determined by biological rhythms.
