Abstract Results of medical examinations in 37 hydroquinone-production workers and chronic and subacute toxicity studies are reported. Hydroquinone is widely used as a developer and antioxidant. The exposed workers showed low red blood cell counts and haemoglobin levels, and complained of strong eye and mucosal irritation. The toxic and irritant effects were confirmed in rats, which developed anaemia and presented lesions of parenchymal organs and metabolic disturbances. An exposure limit of 0.5mg/m3 is recommended.
