Title The Bureau of Mines research program on mine illumination.
Bibliographic information Apr. 1978, Vol.64, No.4, p.49-53. Illus.
Abstract To demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of providing additional illumination in workplaces in underground coal mines, the U.S. Bureau of Mines illuminated 38 machines and four longwall faces in a total of 22 mines. These installations provided guidelines by which most of the machines utilised by the industry could be illuminated. This article describes the illumination systems, reports that analysis of performance over a 3-month period showed good component reliability, describes on information programme launched by the Bureau of Mines concerning the mandatory introduction of additional illumination in coal mines required by U.S. Federal illumination standards (Code of Federal Regulations, Part 1719, Title 30, 1 Oct. 1976), and reports on computerised and other systems for evaluation of mine illumination being developed by the Bureau of Mines and by the U.S. Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA).
