Abstract This guide gives advice supplementing the recommendations made by the International Atomic Energy Agency for the safe transport of radioactive materials (IAEA Safety Series No.6, 1973) and the advisory material given in IAEA Safety Series No.37, 1973. Definitions are followed by sections devoted to: design study, design guide (shielding, containment, heat dissipation, pressure build-up, mechanical and thermal protection, vibration, etc.); design approval; application for approval and certification; manufacture and use of packaging, etc. A list of international and United Kingdom regulations, and guides to design calculation for mechanical protection, thermal testing, vibration testing, etc. are appended. Tables: insolation data; requirements for Type B(U) and B(M) designs; maximum package radiation levels; maximum permissible levels of non-fixed radioactive contamination, etc.
