Abstract Statistical data are given showing the trend towards fewer falls on the level in Sweden, but standards and directives on this subject are not sufficiently explicit. The mechanism and causes of falls are analysed (slippery floors due to spills, unexpected obstacles, sudden avoiding movements, etc.); it is tiring to walk on slippery floors. Much of the article is devoted to measurement of the friction coefficient between shoe sole and floor, and to tests with an instrument simulating the position of the foot at the start of a step. Results are given and the differences between smooth and rough floor surfaces and between shoe soles made of different materials are analysed. Falls are more likely if the antislip floor covering is considered alone than when studied in relation to non-slip soles.
