Abstract The various types of emergency lighting (safety, standby, substitute lighting), are defined with reference to the German (Fed.Rep) regulations. The technical requirements to be satisfied by emergency lighting are examined on the basis of British, Soviet and West German studies: illuminance levels of approx. 0.5-1.5lx are sufficient for evacuation of the workplace. Glare should be limited to very low levels. The values prescribed by various standards are shown. Considerations on the design of emergency lighting equipment.
