Abstract 7mg/kg fluoride was administered daily for a year. Fluorosis varied individually, but was of only minor degree. Equivalent quantities of boron and iron given daily as antidotes increased urinary fluoride excretion, normalised the enzyme system in the blood serum, reduced the fluoride content of bone on chemical analysis, and prevented thickening of the cortex of the long bones, as radiological and histological investigations showed. Prolonged administration of iron gave rise to toxic side effects and finally osteoporosis. Boron generally had a better antagonistic effect on fluoride and caused no toxic side effects.
