Abstract Aspects of miners' lamps dealt with: fixture points (helmet, belt), weight of the storage battery, luminous efficiency, type of bulb, rated voltage, service life and profitability. Table comparing the characteristics of different types of lamp. The choice of stationary lamps is made on the basis of their luminance, luminous efficiency and service life. Comparison of these factors for different lamps shows an advantage for fluorescent tubes. Flameproof construction should be enhanced for higher temperatures. The low temperatures of fluorescent tubes allow recourse to increased safety methods. Arguments against the English system of 125V direct current and advice for planning of lighting installations in mines.
