Abstract An occupational health survey of several USSR textile mills showed that static electricity rose to 3,000-15,000V/cm. The frequency of hypertension and neurovegetative dysfunction cases observed among workers was 7.6% and 35.8%, respectively (1.4% and 5.7% in controls). Workers in high energy density electric fields exhibited formication sensation; the dielectric resistance of their skin showed large decreases. Experiments on rabbits in electrostatic fields showed increase in skin temperature, dilatation of capillaries and sympathetic nervous system disorders.
