Abstract Instead of basing the ease of safety colour identification on the illuminant, the safety colour is designed to be used with any illuminant. The chromaticities of present colours illuminated by standard fluorescent, high pressure and mercury lamps are compared and the ambiguities are shown. Two new approaches are discussed: redesign of spectral reflectance distribution and use of fluorescent safety colours. The chromaticities of the new colours using various illuminants are shown, and the advantages pointed out (reliability, use of illuminants lacking certain colours).
