Abstract Mixtures of the vapours of 2,6-dimethylphenol (2,6-xylenol) and of methanol, which are formed during production of polyphenylene oxide, are hazardous to the health of exposed workers. Results are reported of experiments in which white rats were exposed to various doses of 2,6-xylenol and methanol, and subjected to repeated inhalation of their vapours separately and together. A synergistic effect of the 2 compounds was noted on both acute (single) and chronic exposure. The combined concentration of 2,6-xylenol and methanol should thus be less than the sum of their TLVs when both are present in the workplace air.
