Abstract Results of human experiments undertaken to determine the relations between (1) the electrical capacitance of the body and (2) the height of the body and the type of floor-covering material. Man senses an accumulation of static charges when they have reached 25kV. Determination of the maximum safe potential for the human body in relation to the minimum energy required to ignite a gaseous mixture showed that the energy of a static discharge coming from the body is enough to ignite all gas-air or vapour-air mixtures and some dust-air mixtures. This hazard can be calculated by an equation, which is given.
